The Exotic Northeast of Myanmar

Myanmar’s Northeast is known for its exotic charm. From Pyin Oo Lwin , the train takes travelers through a thrilling valley, crossing the Gokteik Viaduct constructed by the United States which is the second-highest railway bridge in the world. After the bridge, the train arrives at Hsipaw (Thibaw), the former capital of the Shan Kingdom, where an Austrian-born Shan princess once lived. The remnants of its former glory can still be seen today. A five-hour drive from Lashio, the railway terminus city, connects travelers to Muse, the major border city on the Myanmar–China border. Alternatively, another route leads to Kengtung (Kyaingtong), a town famous for various ethnic minority communities and trekking spots. From there, you can proceed to Mong La (Milar), often called the “Myanmar’s Las Vegas,” due to its exotic charm and nightlife. Here, a world of casinos and a sleepless border city on the Myanmar-China border. This astonishing sight will make you question if you are truly still in Myanmar.
