Bagan, a World Heritage Site and one of the three great Buddhist archaeological sites in the world (along with Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Borobudur in Indonesia), is located just a 90-minute flight from Yangon. Dotted across a vast plain are over 2,000 pagodas and temples, welcoming visitors with an awe-inspiring sight.
The Bagan Kingdom flourished for about 250 years, from the 11th to 13th centuries, developing a world of precious art, including architecture, sculpture, and mural paintings. The sunsets seen from the terraces of the Bagan ruins are unforgettable experience, evoking the splendor and grandeur of the ancient kingdom.
About an hour’s drive southeast of Bagan is Mount Popa. A monastery is dramatically perched on the sheer cliff face of this mountain, which is known as a sacred place for Nat (spirit) worship and the panoramic view from the summit is truly breathtaking.
