The Taunggyi Hot Air Balloon Festival is held every year around the full moon of Tazaungdaing in November, lasting about a week.

During the festival, ethnic minorities from around Taunggyi, along with tourists from various cities and countries, all gather together, making the town lively and crowded. The final day is the most exciting and festive.

Throughout the event, beautifully decorated balloons are launched, and visitors can enjoy both daytime and nighttime competitions.

The citizens of Taunggyi are deeply passionate about participating in this once-a-year hot air balloon festival, and they work hard and tirelessly to ensure their team wins the competition.

It takes more than 50 people working day and night for one to two months to complete a single large balloon, investing not only their time but also a considerable amount of money.

In everyone’s hearts, the desire for their team to win is strong, and starting two months before the festival, they come together to design, plan, and work hard to create their masterpiece.

The balloons launched during the daytime are designed to resemble animals (elephants, birds, pigs, fish, cows, etc.), while at night, large balloons shaped like rugby balls are released into the sky.

During the festival, more than 350 hot air balloons are released every year.

It’s a unique opportunity to experience and participate in a tradition and scenery unlike any other country, together with the local ethnic minorities.
